Smart Meter News in Other States

MAINE: OPT-OUT FOR ADDITIONAL CHARGE
After receiving numerous complaints about health, hacking, and privacy concerns with the wireless digital devices, the Public Utility Commission of the US state of Maine voted to allow customers to opt out of the meter change at a cost of $12 a month.

CONNECTICUT:  REGULATORS SAY NO TO SMART METERS
In Connecticut, another US state to consider smart metering recently, regulators declined a request by the state's largest utility, Connecticut Light & Power, to install 1.2 million of the devices, arguing that the potential savings in electric bills do not justify the cost. CL&P already offers its customers time-based rates. The state's Attorney General George Jepsen was quoted as saying the proposal would cause customers to spend upwards of $500 million on meters and get few benefits in return, a claim that Connecticut Light & Power disputed.

CALIFORNIA: 57 LOCAL GOVERNMENTS OPPOSE SMART METER INSTALLATIONS
Of those, the following have passed ordinances making the installation of smart meters illegal within their jurisdictions:
The counties of Lake, Marin, Mendocino and Santa Cruz
The cities of Capitola, Clearlake, Fairfax, Lakeport, Ojai, Rio Dell, Ross, Seaside, Sepastopol, and Watsonville
Big Valley Rancheria/Tribal Community of Pomo Indians

OREGON: THE CITY COUNCIL OF ASHLAND VOTES TO DROP OPT-OUT FEE The City Council has turned down a request from the city-owned Ashland Electric Department to charge customers $120 plus $20 a month to opt out of the new meters, which save money by transmitting the readings so meter readers don’t have to drive down driveways and get out of cars. Instead, it adopted a budget that moved $150,000 from reserves to cover the costs of customers who don’t want smart meters, which so far number about 150. VERMONT: STATE LEGISLATURE ELIMINATES SMART METER OPT-OUT FEE The bill (S.214) as passed, “allows customers to choose not to have a wireless smart meter installed, at no additional monthly or other charge.” Utilities have already received permission from the Public Service Board to delay implementing previously approved opt-out fees until April 2013, but this recent legislation delays the fees indefinitely.
